Question Monday, January 21st, 2008: Numbers Game

"I am new to sales and my boss keeps saying 'Selling is simply a numbers game'. How is selling a numbers game?" - Runner

Good question for someone new to sales or someone looking to start a sales career. It means successful selling is all about prospecting. To simplify if you have 1,000 prospects in your territory, the key to your success is calling the 1,000 prospects (numbers). People new to sales or sales people afraid to make cold calls, will spend time trying to figure out how not to make the calls. 'Selling is a Numbers Game' means doing the hard work of making the calls either in person or via the phone.

Territory planning is very important but I would take a hard working sales rep making the calls (numbers) versus a smart person spending all their time analyzing their territory. If you are successful prospecting, you will have a long, successful, and profitable sales career.
