Friday, January 18th, 2008: Quota Sandbagging

CloserQ is designed to help sales people win more quality business. Question of the day.

"I have a monthly quota and it is Friday, January 18th and I have already made my number for the month. My boss is riding me to close more deals and I will not make the accelerator in my comp plan, so there is no financial upside not waiting until February. What should I do?" - The Sandman

First, great problem of already being at quota with two weeks to go in the month. Next, never stop prospecting even when you are 100% of plan. Top sales people continually (daily) work on the three primary areas of selling: prospecting (deals outside the funnel); moving deals through the funnel; and closing deals . You have to constantly prospect or you will find yourself 50% of quota in March.

My advice on this month is go for win-win, are there some smaller deals you can bring in over the next two weeks to appease your sales manager? I assume all deals will help towards your annually quota. If you have some whales, continue to work them and save those for February, while remembering time hurts all deals.

Lastly, if you have a good relationship with your sales manager, I would let him know the sales plan does not incent you go to over your quota this month. Readers respond to the daily question.

I recommend on holding back on the deals until your comp plan is fixed because I am sure your boss would be on your even more if your are under quota in February.
