June 10th, 2009: New to Sales and Ethics

"OK, I have never sold anything in my life and now I am a salesmen what do I do. I will not be deceitful or underhanded ever, please help give me a look at the road, so I will know how to travel and I will do the rest." Anonymous

Anonymous, you have the wrong perception of sales and sales people. In fact, one of the keys to long term success in sales is being ethical. Quality sales people help individuals, companies, and drive the economy. As with any industry (politicians, doctors, lawyers, police, etc), there will be unethical people and my experience with sales people is that we are not different from other industries. Yes there are some unethical people, however the majority are ethical individuals and quality people. Personally, I am proud to be an ethical sales person.

The major key to being successful in sales is hard work, not being deceitful. In the long run, you have to be both ethical and hard working. Yes, a sales person can win one sale by being deceitful but you cannot win quality sales over time by being unethical. At my company, we don’t consider a customer truly a client until they buy twice.

Lastly, one of my personal motivations for selling is helping my clients. One reason I love selling is that I believe I am truly helping people with my solutions. For you it could be helping companies be better run, growing their business, saving money, and differentiating them from their competitors. You could be helping an individual at a company get a promotion, save them time, and/or help them solve a business problem. If you are selling to consumers, are you helping them with finances, health, time management, or simply satisfying a personal need. Talk to the current clients at your company, at a detail level to learn how they are using your solutions and you may find you are helping people more than you think.

As a sales person looks at yourself as a ‘Professional Problem Solver’ and ‘Helping People Buy’.
