Wednesday, July 29th, 2009: Cell Phone Coverage

“Shaun, I had put 10 plus calls into a strategic prospect and I was driving in a section with bad cell phone coverage, when I could tell by caller ID, that the guy is finally returning my call. I answered, but the call was garbled, we had trouble hearing each other, which I could tell frustrated him, then the call dropped, I called right back but I still haven’t got a hold of him since. What would you of done?” Wilson

Wilson, good question, even though cell phones are 1000% better than ten years ago, there are still major gaps in service depending on your area and cell carrier. Assuming you know the area and you know there is poor cell coverage, send the call to voicemail. You have got nothing to gain. If you do decide to answer, pull your car over, this will significantly increase your odds of a better call.

I recently had a similar situation, so I can tell you what I did. I was recently driving across Arkansas from meetings in Little Rock to Fayetteville, when I got a call from a high valued client. I immediately told her I was on a cell phone and I will call you right back if I lose you. As you would guess, the topic was important to her and she got frustrated when the call dropped. She even said, ‘Thank you for telling me you were on a cell phone, so I knew you would call me back.’ I ended up pulling over, apologizing, and doing the rest of the call on the side of the highway, when I called back.

Pulling over is good for three reasons: safety if you are driving, to take down key notes discussed for later reference, and for the most obvious...and most annoying to clients...dropped calls. There time is very valuable and when you waste it, you risk your next sale!
