For the weekend of December 10th, 2010, I had the pleasure of experiencing 7 basketball events starting at 6pm on Friday evening and ending at 9:30pm Sunday night.
Friday, December 10th:
6pm: My wife, Christine; daughter, Madison; son, Carson; and myself attended the Walker Girls Varsity Basketball game vs. Holy Innocents' High School. Holy Innocents' is the #7 ranked girls team in the state and The Walker Girls came roaring out of gate with a 12-0 lead but couldn't hold on and eventually lost, 32-38
7:30pm: The Walker Boys Varsity Team get off to very a cold start vs. Holy Innocents' and were down 0-13 before they eventually scored and they were down 11 at half-time.
8:15pm: My 5th grade son, Carson; played a 4 minute exhibition with other Walker 5th graders during half-time. It was a free for all with ten of them flying up and down the court for 4 hectic minutes with only one basket being scored by the other team. Carson had a blast with his friends.
9:45pm: The Walker Boys come roaring back after being down 15 points in the 3rd quarter to tie the game in regulation and win in overtime, 51-49. Coles Gym was rocking with both Holy Innocents and The Walker School having fantastic fans. When Walker finally won in overtime the Walker fans stormed the court.
Saturday, December 11th:
9:00am: I am fortunate to coach my daughter Madison's 6th to 8th grade girls Harrison High Youth Basketball (HYBA) team and I am also the girls league coordinator. Our team is called th
e Wolverines and we were 2-1 coming in this game. We played a team from Acworth, We were the better team and blew them out, 28-3. What I was most proud of is that every one of the seven girls on my team scored.
12:30pm: Madison is an 8th grader and she also plays on The Walker Middle School Girls A Team. They were 5-1 and have a great chance to win the league this season. Madison started and they beat the North Cobb Christian Lady Eagles, 46-13. Similar to her recreational team, all eleven girls scored. I got to be the time keeper for the game. It is exciting to be so close the game but I have to keep reminding myself to keep up with the clock, score, and fouls versus watching the game.
4:00pm: Non-basketballe event, Christine got tickets for the four of us to see Cirque Du Soleil Ovo in Atlanta. The event was unbelievable with a combination of strength, athletics, dance, and gymnastics in bright colors.
Sunday, December 12th:
1:00pm: Madison has her third game and second HYBA game of the weekend. The HYBA Wolverines got off to slow start and we were losing 0-7 at the end of the first quarter. We battled back to win 23-21. My favorite play of the game was in the 4th quarter when Madison did a cross over drive to the left, where she made a left handed (she is a righty) lay-up, was fouled, then made the free throw for an old school 3 point play. Being 4-1 we are tied for first and as league coordinator, our goal is parity, and every team in the league has at least 1 win, which is great after only 5 games. Last year we had one team that didn't win a game and another theam who only beat that team.
4:00pm: I am also blessed to coach Carson's boys 5th - 6th grade HYBA team, the Celtics. We were 3-0, played a team that was 2-1 s whos only loss was to another undefeated team. We came out on fire, playing our best quarter of the season, being up 18-4 after the first quarter. Carson played great including being point guard in the first quarter. We took it easy the rest of the way and easily won 41-33. For the second game in a row everyone of my seven boys scored. I believe we have the second best team in the league and I am looking forward to playing the best team after the holidays.
5:30pm: Sunday evening mass at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
7:30pm: I finished up my basketball weekend by personally playing hoops in a Sunday evening pick up league at The Walker School. The leauge is Walker 'Dads and Grads' with the ages running from 19 to 45. I have been playing in the league for 10 years and even thought I am lot slower then when I started in the league, I still love playing once a week and make a jum shot every now and then.
This past weekend was a lot of fun spending time with my family and enjoying basketball. It also shows to never give up, three of the teams were down 0-7, 0-12, and 0-13, and all of them came back to win.
