Thursday, January 25th, 2008: New Sales Manager

"I am getting a new sales manager next week, a guy from the outside the company, the rumor mill says he is a hardass. Should I start looking for a new job?" - Nervous in Motown.

My first reaction is no but keep your options open. As usual, there a lot of other dynamics in your decision, are you over quota?, did you make quota last year?, what happened to your previous sales manager (left the company on his own, fired, internal promotion)?. Lets assume the above is positive then I would not start looking for a job.

My advice is to suck up to your new sales manager until you get a sense of his management style. Don't be locked into this is the way we have always done it. I assume your new manager will want to try new things and be open to the changes. A good book to read is 'Who Moved My Cheese?' by Spencer Johnson. Spencer talks about how change is inevitable and don't get locked into the old way of doing and thinking. Also be prepared to put in additional hours in the beginning of his tenure.

Good selling and working with your new manager.
