Wednesday, July 9th, 2008: Interviewing

"I recently had an interview, why do they ask so many questions, and so many of the same questions by different people? They also asked what are your expectations of this company, how would I know if I have never worked there?" anonymous

Anonymous, you must be a recent college graduate or new to interviewing. Companies ask so many questions, because hiring quality employees is key to a company’s a success whether a one person start-up making their first hire or walmart adding their 2 millionth employee. Interviewing is so important to finding quality candidates and screen out lesser candidates, larger companies have sophisticated processes to assist them in finding top candidates. Part of their process is often a list of standard interview questions. When you interview with multiple people they will use the same set of base questions and that is why you get the same questions multiple times. After you leave the interview, the interviewers will get together to review your questions, including consistency in your responses, then determine the next steps (make an offer, another round interviews, check references, have you take an exam, determine you are not a candidate, etc.).

The question of your expectations of a company is to determine if you are a cultural fit for the company. As I mentioned in other responses, company culture and finding candidates that fit your culture is important to retaining employees and keeping up employee morale. I recently interviewed a quality sales candidate, my concern was the guy was a lone wolf and would not work as a team player. In lots of sales organizations they are looking for independent lone wolves sales people to go out and sell their solutions on their own. On my team, yes, I need independent sales people to meet their individual quotas, but I also need someone to work as a team and assist their fellow sales people when needed, and to support the company. We determined to pass on a quality candidate because they did not fit our sales culture.

Recommendations, as someone who is new to interviewing:
· Do your homework on the company
· Do your homework on the position
· Prepare a set of questions prior to the interview
· Interview the company to determine if they are a fit for you
· Be as calm as possible during the interview process
· Be yourself
· Answer the questions honestly
