September 16th, 2009: Resume

“CloserQ, to follow up to a previous post, what do you look for in Resumes? I have been with the same company for 7 years and there are rumors of a merger and I need to update my resume”, Daniel Negreanu

Daniel, good question and I am assuming you are talking about my previous post on August 5th, Resume vs. Cover Letter. To answer your question on what do I look for in a resume as a hiring manager, see my response below and some comments on resumes:

What I personally look for:
· Industry Experience
· How long they have been at each ompany
· I like to see at least 3 years at multiple companies and 5 plus years at atlease one company
· Is there a gap in their job history
· Based on Education and Job History, I try to gauge how old they are
· Accomplishments, what have they achieved in their career

In reality, I scan a resume in less than 2 minutes to determine if I should personally set up a phone interview; or if I should send to one of my directors to get their feedback or have the director do a phone interview; or based on their experience send to another hiring manager.

1. Network every unturned stone, use Social Media to leverage this search
2. Use your industry contacts
3. Create a professional personal website that sells you and what you do. Either hire someone, or use the likes of a service like Mysalesrep.com
4. Consistant job growth without bouncing around is great, but some have move around for good reasons. Explain yourself on your site in a easy story of your background.
